National Board of Directors: Elect Officer & Member Positions

The Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association is seeking outstanding leaders who want to make a difference for the more than 38 million Americans with diabetes, and the millions of scientists, health care professionals, and caregivers who support them. 

Each year, the Board has a select few roles available for leaders to serve. In particular, the Board is seeking business leaders with senior-level organizational management experience as well as noted scientific and health care leaders. Ensuring a strong, diverse volunteer leadership is crucial to the success of our organization and we are currently accepting applications for the following Officer and Board Member positions:

  • Secretary/Treasurer-Elect

The American Diabetes Association seeks volunteers who hold the passion and skills to offer strategic counsel that will help our organization deliver on our mission to prevent and cure diabetes, and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes, and who reflect the professional, geographic, and ethnic diversity of the Association's constituents.

We are seeking leaders who want to step up their participation in the fight against diabetes to help us change the future of this devastating disease.

Member, National Board of Directors

For the 2024 Class of the National Board of Directors, we seek a diverse set of applicants with demonstrated leadership in their chosen profession. We are seeking diverse leaders with the passion, vision, skills, and expertise to offer strategic guidance that will help propel our organization to great heights. Volunteers who assume a national service position become a vital communications link between the Association's national structure and the community leadership in their local areas.

The National Board of Directors will meet three to four times per year with an orientation early in the year. Regular attendance and participation are expected at each of these meetings. Each Board member is also assigned to serve on a national committee.

We request your completed application submission by Friday, October 20, 2023 8:00 p.m. (EDT). Submissions should include, as separate attachments, the completed application, a headshot (follow the photo guidelines) and a completed Conflict of Interest Disclosure Form. Please submit all materials via email to ADAApplications@diabetes.org.

Please retain a copy of your completed application for your personal file.

Selection Process

Applications for these positions are reviewed by the National Board Development Committee. Applications are evaluated based upon the expertise and service of the individuals in context of the needs, goals, and objectives of the Association. Interviews will also be conducted.

The Board Development Committee presents a recommended slate of candidates for these positions to the voting membership of the American Diabetes Association, which includes the National Board of Directors, and delegates from the Community Leadership Boards.

The electronic vote takes place in early Fall for appointment beginning in January of the following year.

Expenses Associated with Meetings

Consistent with the Association's travel and expense guidelines, reasonable and appropriate travel and hotel expenses for the Officers and Board Members in connection with the meetings will be covered. Individuals may also choose to pay their own expenses, which typically qualify as a tax-deductible contribution for income tax purposes.
