Learner Objectives
At the end of this activity, the attendees should be able to:

  • review the latest research on the best treatment strategies for improving glycemic control;
  • identify and improve management of heart disease using such non-traditional markers as C-reactive protein, calcium, Lp(a), homeocystein, and adipokines;
  • access nutrition research on carbohydrate intake, glycemic index/load, and nutritional supplements in the management of patients with diabetes;
  • review strategies for improving inpatient management of diabetes including intensive care, step down management, nursing management, and the transition to outpatient status;
  • use motivational interviewing techniques to improve outcomes in patients with diabetes;
  • employ appropriate diabetes treatment protocols throughout the life cycle by examining pharmacotherapy for children, PCOS and pregnancy, and the challenges with treating the elderly;
  • encourage patients to exercise through a better understanding of physical activity and metabolic control, the role of exercise in body weight management, and how to keep individuals motivated to exercise.
