Breaking News: Diabetes Research and Programs Renewed

April 07, 2020

Included in the latest relief package for individuals and families impacted by COVID-19, which the President signed into law last week, was an extension of the Special Diabetes Program (SDP) until November 30, 2020. This extension allows sustained funding for research toward a cure for type 1 diabetes and for type 2 diabetes prevention and control activities in Native American communities. ADA thanks Congress for renewing SDP through recent legislation.

Both components of SDP provide a clear return on investment and it is important that Congress provides a long-term extension before both programs expire in November. Repeated short-term renewals cause uncertainty and create challenges in recruitment and retention of grantee programs and limits long-term research opportunities. ADA will continue to work with Congress to ensure that both programs receive a multi-year renewal, and we will keep you posted with more ways to get involved in the coming months.
