On Saturday, September 26, the American Diabetes Association® (ADA) will host its signature fundraising event to raise awareness, connect communities, and strengthen critical support for individuals and families impacted by diabetes. Step Out® Walk: Pittsburgh will bring together the diabetes community, volunteers, and advocates for a meaningful walk welcoming people of all ages and abilities.

This year, Step Out Walk: Pittsburgh is rallying the community around its bold Bridge to $1,000,000 campaign, with the goal of becoming the first Step Out Walk in ADA history to raise $1,000,000. The Pittsburgh ADA team is building on incredible momentum and calling on companies, teams, families, and individuals across the region to help make history. Every dollar raised brings the community one step closer to crossing the Bridge to $1,000,000 and advancing the ADA’s mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

Date: Saturday, September 26
Time: Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with the opening ceremony and walk beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Location: PNC Park,115 Federal Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15212

Step Out Walk benefits diabetes research, education, management, and prevention, supporting the ADA’s fight to end diabetes. Increasingly, this includes people living with obesity, as the Obesity Association, a division of the ADA, expands outreach and education.

“The Bridge to $1,000,000 represents so much more than a fundraising goal. It represents so many people across our region coming together for the millions of Americans living with diabetes and the families who love them,” said Chelsea Musial, the ADA’s executive director. “Pittsburgh has an incredible opportunity to make history by becoming the first Step Out Walk to raise $1,000,000. This is a moment that demonstrates what is possible when an entire community comes together around one mission.”

“Pittsburgh has always been a city that steps up when it matters, and the Bridge to $1,000,000 is our opportunity to show just how powerful this community can be,” said Mark Tamburri, the ADA’s executive chair of Step Out Walk: Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburg Medical Center’s executive vice president and chief legal officer. “Reaching $1,000,000 would be a historic achievement, but what matters most is what those dollars make possible for people living with diabetes. I’m proud to stand alongside our corporate partners, walkers, families, and supporters as we work together to cross that bridge and make Step Out history right here in Pittsburgh.”

Mark has also taken on a friendly competition with the executive chair of Northern California’s Tour de Cure®, which occurs on the same weekend. This Silicon Valley vs. Steel City competition is set to be the ADA’s largest fundraising campaign.

This year’s event along the picturesque PNC Park Riverwalk will include:

  • Lively music and performances
  • A kids’ zone with fun activities
  • A wellness village
  • Diabetes resources and expert advice on management and prevention

Diabetes isn't just a disease—it's an epidemic—with over 40 million Americans living with diabetes and its devastating consequences. Approximately 1,385,000 adults in Pennsylvania, or 11.6% of the adult population, have diagnosed diabetes. Every year, an estimated 91,000 adults in Pennsylvania are diagnosed with diabetes.

Events like Step Out play a vital role in increasing awareness, connecting communities, contributing to diabetes prevention and management, and supporting the ADA’s vision of a life free of diabetes and all its burdens.

This year’s Step Out Walk is sponsored by:

  • Presenting Sponsors: GNC and UPMC
  • Premier Sponsors: Chicken of the Sea, Jones Day, and Meyer Unkovic & Scott
  • Elite Sponsors: Highmark Wholecare, Morgan Lewis, New York Life, Pietragallo, and Thermo Fisher Scientific
