“Diabetes is more than a statistic to me, it is personal. As someone living with diabetes for over 20 years, I understand firsthand the importance of having access to the right information, quality care, and the support needed to manage this disease. State of Diabetes: Birmingham brings our healthcare professionals and our community together to turn awareness into action and to identify practical ways we can improve prevention, treatment, and access to care for people across Alabama. Together, we can create healthier communities and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by diabetes and obesity,” said Mozetta Jackson, the ADA’s executive director serving Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.
Over 40 million Americans are living with diabetes, and every 21 seconds, someone is newly diagnosed. In Alabama, approximately 612,000 adults, or 13.2% of the adult population, have diagnosed diabetes. Each year, an estimated 51,000 adults in the state are diagnosed. Additionally, approximately 40% of the adult population are living with obesity. State of Diabetes is an annual community event that brings together employers, payers, healthcare professionals, and community leaders for meaningful discussions around diabetes and obesity prevention, treatment, cost, workplace wellness, and improving access to care.
This year’s event will feature an expert panel discussion: From Diabetes and Obesity Guidelines to Outcomes: Translating Evidence into Real-World Practice.
The event will include:
- A panel discussion led by distinguished experts sharing insights on diabetes and obesity
- A networking reception providing opportunities for attendees to collaborate and share ideas
- Interactive breakout activities designed to encourage deeper engagement on diabetes- and obesity-related topics
Attendees will also receive a variety of ADA resources designed to enhance diabetes prevention, management, and support, as well as access to a digital action-oriented toolkit summarizing key insights and strategies.
This year’s event is sponsored by Cooper Green Mercy Health Services.
