Meet Leora

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about a year after pancreatic surgery. I was at work acting confused and my friend took me to the emergency room. I had a blood sugar over 500. I made several trips to the emergency room where my diabetes was treated until I could see an endocrinologist. I was started on metformin and insulin. I still couldn’t get my blood sugars controlled until I started the insulin pump. It’s been about six years and it’s been a hard road. Sharing My Story: Roxanna

My diabetes journey began in August 2016. I was 29 years old. Like many who are first diagnosed, I ended up in the hospital with high blood sugar, severe dehydration, fatigue and exhaustion. “If you were my sister,” I recall my doctor saying, “I’d send you to the hospital.” And off to the hospital I went. I remember that day like it was yesterday: the doctors, the nurses, the diabetes educator, the concerned look on my parents’ faces. I didn’t even know what diabetes was at the time, much less how it would change my life forever.

I quickly realized that I wanted to be in the diabetes community and share my story and passion for spreading much-needed awareness! In 2020, I started an Instagram page talking about my diabetes and all that comes with it. It quickly grew, and shortly after, so many people wanted to hear my story. I

Meet Michelle

Hello, my name is Michelle. I was first diagnosed with diabetes in April 2000. It was the most horrifying moment of my life. My thoughts were about how I am going to manage as I was a big-time junk food eater, and most of the time, I still am. I have the food police on my trail 24 hours a day. Boy, do they irritate me. I try so hard to maintain. I am a teacher of 39 years teaching preschool. Diabetes is so deep in my family (grandmother, mother, and aunt who is deceased, two aunts, two uncles, two sisters, one cousin, my daughter, and myself are living with diabetes). It is a struggle. I tend
