I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 5 years old. I am the only member of my family that has this diagnosis. I was fortunate to have a mother that was a registered nurse and was relentless in educating herself on proper management and advocating for me in a society largely uneducated about the disease. Inspired by my mother, I am inspired to stay up to date with proper blood glucose management, balancing life’s demands, and utilizing the tools that have become available. Health care has progressed tremendously since I was diagnosed, but we still have a long way to go both in terms of fine-tuning tools for management as well as improving access to these tools for me and the millions of other people who need these medications and devices to lead a balanced life. With the help of my family, coaching, and health care team, I was able to graduate college and run a marathon. I hope to continue learning, growing, and advocating for people living with the condition. We are so much more than just a diagnosis.
