The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has been providing support and unforgettable experiences to children living with diabetes through our camps and family retreats since 1949. Each year, we host thousands of campers and their families across the country, offering a unique blend of adventure, education, mentorship, and fun.

Established in 1955, Camp John Warvel is an overnight camp named after the first physician to administer insulin in Indiana. Campers enjoy archery, field sports, high ropes, arts and crafts, and more!

ADA Camp is a lifeline for children living with diabetes to develop the critical skills needed to thrive while managing their diabetes. Attending camp helps children develop social skills, self-respect and life-long friendships. Campers meet others just like them while encouraging independence, building self-confidence and gaining an awareness of a healthy lifestyle through education, nutrition, exercise, glucose control, and emotional well-being.

*Financial Assistance Available. No child will ever be turned away from camp due to cost. If the camp fee is a roadblock for your family, the American Diabetes Association® offers financial assistance. Nearly half of our families receive financial assistance to cover part or the full cost of camp.

Flexible Pricing Options. We understand that every family's financial situation is unique, that's why we offer three pricing options.

  • Full Price. This is the true cost for a child to attend camp. Families who can pay the full amount may select this option.
  • ADA Sponsored Price. Thanks to the generous support of sponsors, partners, and donations, the ADA subsidizes 50% of the full camp price, offering this discounted rate. 
  • Financial Assistance. Additional assistance is available to qualifying families who cannot afford the discounted sponsored price.

Counselors-in-Training (CIT)
For teens ready to step up from camper to counselor, our CIT program offers training in leadership, character development, and youth-working skills. Financial assistance is available.

Camp Director: Joe Esten

Joe Esten is a Camp Director currently living in Verona, Wisconsin. Joe has worked in the camp/youth programs industry for the past ten years and has had the opportunity to work with kids worldwide. He feels strongly about the opportunity for kids to be kids and loves making sure each camper smiles about something every day at camp. Joe’s favorite activities at camp include singing songs, making skits, and especially playing tricks on the other counselors. When Joe is not working in the camp world, he enjoys being outdoors, hiking, kayaking, and traveling. Joe cannot wait to get out there and meet every camper and learn their story. Keep Smiling!

Medical Director: Dr. Todd Nebesio 

Dr. Todd Nebesio is a pediatric endocrinologist at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in Indianapolis. He has been a part of the medical team at Camp John Warvel since 2000, and co-medical director since 2007. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 13 years old. Camp is a great experience for kids with diabetes as it allows them to have fun in a safe environment. He encourages all his patients with diabetes to attend camp so that they can meet other kids with diabetes who may be battling the same daily obstacles that they are.

Medical Director: Dr. Linda DiMeglio 

Dr. DiMeglio is a Professor and the Chief of the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology in the Department of Pediatrics at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Indiana. She directs local and national research teams focused on preventing type 1 diabetes, preserving beta cell function, and improving metabolic control and quality of life for persons living with the disease. She is the Vice Chair for Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet and co-Principal Investigator of the national DiabDocs Physician Scientist Development Program. She is a co-chair of the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes Guidelines Editorial Board. Dr. DiMeglio maintains an active clinical practice, caring for children with diabetes and endocrine disorders and mentoring trainees. She has served as a medical director of Camp John Warvel since 1998. She considers camp to be “part of her DNA” after all these years and believes strongly that camp offers numerous benefits for campers, their families, and the medical and lay staff at who working side by side to provide diabetes care.

Note: Not all positions are available at each camp. You can find specific roles for your camp when applications open. The safety of our campers is our number one priority. All volunteers, staff and medical personnel must complete an application, interview, and background check before being hired.
