Diabetes and Its Consequences

Here are the facts:

  • Alabama has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the U.S., with nearly 600,000 (or 14.9% of the population) living with the disease
  • Diabetes is the number one cause of new cases of blindness in adults
  • Obesity accounts for up to 53% of new diabetes cases in the U.S. every year

Beyond that, diabetes affects the WHOLE body—from the feet to the brain, to the kidneys to the heart. But there’s good news.

Diabetes, obesity, and diabetes-related eye disease can be stopped in their tracks when we are all united in the fight. Through free and low-cost programs, lifesaving research, and advocacy that fights for health equity for all—and you as our partner—we know we can win.
