Following efforts from the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to overhaul the Guidance for Federal Financial Assistance, there have been reports that the president was also considering an executive order that would create a new external committee with the authority to veto National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants that do not conform to the administration’s political priorities. It is unclear if the White House will produce an executive order to this effect. The American Diabetes Association® (ADA) remains strongly opposed to any effort to cut, cancel, or politicize federal biomedical research funding, including funding for federal diabetes research and education programs.
The ADA is extremely concerned with actions taken by the OMB this year to change the way federal research grants are awarded, including politicizing the gold standard peer review process and therefore jeopardizing NIH-funded projects in pursuit of diabetes treatments and, ultimately, a cure. We stand with the diabetes research and prevention community, the diabetes patient advocacy community, and our allies in Congress to bring an end to attempts to overhaul this country’s critically important, nonpartisan, cutting-edge biomedical research infrastructure. The ADA finds any action that would give political appointees the authority to dictate federal research policy and priorities extremely disturbing.
