Meet Serena

Serena lives in Houston, TX. She finds purpose in helping others find the information they need to live healthy lives. When I was 20 years old, I hit a point of exhaustion. I thought it was from trying to balance being a student and a full-time employee, but one night I was at home, couldn’t stay awake, and was having pain all over my body. My aunt took me to the emergency room, and it was there that I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. At the time, I remember thinking diabetes was something older people got, not a 20-year-old. While my diabetes diagnosis was difficult to deal with on its own

Sharing My Story: Nikki

Nikki lives with type 2 diabetes—and thrives, despite her diagnosis and her experience with several diabetes-related complications. My name is Nikki and I am a type 2 diabetic of seven years. For the last two years, I've spent my New Years’ Eves in the ICU battling acute pancreatitis, sepsis, and ketoacidosis. I treat every day as a blessing and a gift, as each hospitalization was worse than the last. As such, I've vowed to train for a marathon to run in honor of the American Diabetes Association and have also raised $1,000 in donations. Additionally, I am an avid Disneyland 'resident.'

Meet Virginia

Every generation on my mom's side has/had type 2 diabetes. It's unreal how people don't understand the damage diabetes can do to your body. It can affect almost every organ. My mom had glaucoma, retinopathy, needed a kidney transplant, and had portions of her foot amputated. My mom passed when she was 53 due to complications with diabetes. Past relatives also had amputations of the feet and legs. I just didn't realize the extent of the damage from diabetes until I was diagnosed. I am using what my family members went through to monitor my health. It's been rough, but I am trying. I take 15

Meet Patricia

Patricia is a Pilates instructor living with type 1 diabetes. Though she has experienced diabetes-related complications, she has refused to let them keep her down. For the last 17 years, I have been without one eye. I wear a prosthetic eye hand-painted to "look normal" during the day. Type 1 diabetes has stolen my vision. My parents were sure that I must have had type 1 diabetes as a child. My mother developed gestational diabetes when she was pregnant with me, then became a type 1 insulin-dependent diabetic a few years later. She died at 69 from diabetic complications, though she always had

Sharing My Story: Antoinette

Antoinette lives with type 2 diabetes and is committed to fighting the stigma surrounding it. She writes about her experience at realdiabetics.com . I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic about 4 years ago at the age of 42. My introduction to diabetes was quite amazing. I woke up in the ICU of the hospital to learn that my blood sugar on admission was 1315. Yes, you read that right—1315. My A1C was 18.2. I was in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Learn about DKA Although I had several family members with diabetes, I never thought I would become one. I believed that having a healthy diet

Meet Katarina

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at nine years old, which changed my life forever. One minute I was an average nine-year-old, the next I had to deal with the constant challenges of diabetes, including getting several shots each day, learning how to carb count, multiple finger pricks, and many sleepless nights. I was very scared because I had no idea what type 1 diabetes was. I thought it meant something about dying because it had “dia” in the word. I was showing many symptoms, including losing weight, drinking a lot of water, having to use the bathroom frequently, being constantly hungry
