Meet Amitabh

At age 63, having missed my annual physical due to COVID and ignoring obvious signs of polyuria and polydipsia, the results of my A1C being over 14 came as a shock. My previous readings were in the 5.6–5.9 range. Overnight, I went from a pancreas transplant surgeon to a type 2 diabetes patient on Lantus and metformin. Having been treating kidney failure patients from diabetes, it was a shock. I requested and convinced my endocrinologist colleague to prescribe me a CGM (Libre 2) in addition to a finger prick monitor. I knew I had put on extra weight and always had a sweet tooth, but the CGM

Sharing My Story: Jana

Jana Franzen lives in Osage City, Kansas. This is her story: Oh, let's see. Diabetes runs in my family. I had gestational diabetes with my third pregnancy, which covered most of 2002 and the first bit of 2003. Sugars leveled out not long after kiddo got born. Sharing My Story: Erica S.

Hi. My name is Erica Scaglione, I am 27 years and have had type 1 diabetes since the age of seven. Wow, 20 years without any complications—until a few years ago. My kidneys took a hit. I was in end-stage kidney renal failure and had to enter dialysis three times a week. I was, and still am, waiting for a kidney transplant. During this time, my eyes started having issues as well. One day, I woke up and was blind. It took several surgeries and recoveries to regain the sight in my left eye, but not in my right. This was caused by diabetic retinopathy. Having all these health problems was

Meet Christine

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a while ago. I recently had an infection in my right foot. I drove myself to the emergency room. They first tried antibiotics to save the foot. I had to have a bone biopsy. The infection that was taking over my foot was also in the heel. After disease control tried to find out what bacteria it was, I was told I had to have an amputation. I was scared and upset. I went through surgery and then right to rehab. I worked really hard with a walker and physical therapy to learn how to use my left leg. I also gathered as much information as I could to understand

Meet Adriana

I was five years old when diagnosed with type 1 diabetes [T1D]. Because I was so young, I do not remember anything about my diagnosis. However, I do remember my elementary and middle school years living with T1D. They were tough. Like most kids at that age, you just want to fit in. Wearing medical devices on my body that made loud noises and being known as the kid always at the school nurse made me a target for bullying. This caused several years of hating the disease and constantly asking myself, "Why me?" I actually ended up in the hospital almost in DKA [diabetic ketoacidosis] because
